Executive Committee

Emel Djevdet

Emel Djevdet - Chairperson

Emel completed her LLB and LLM at University College London. She then went on to complete the bar vocational course and now works as a trainee solicitor in London. Whilst an International Baccalaureate student, her extended essay focused on the historical causes for the events of 1974 in Cyprus. It was these studies which sparked her interest in the ongoing issues facing Turkish Cypriots today and prompted her to join Embargoed! She was elected the group's Secretary in April 2009 and was elected as Chairperson in July 2011.

Fahri Zihni

Fahri Zihni - Treasurer

I came to live in England in 1971, having previously studied at the English College in Nicosia, Cyprus.

In England, my career has been in Information and Communications Technology in Local Government, in the Higher Education Sector and at the Cabinet Office.

I have been Education Officer, and then President of the Society of IT Management, which is the professional organisation for IT directors and staff in Local Government. I have written articles in the ICT press, and represented organisations in Parliamentary forums.

I am a strong believer in a just and lasting solution for all the people of Cyprus - there has been strife for the people of Cyprus for far too long. As a minority, Turkish Cypriots have been especially at the receiving end of injustice. They have been dispossessed of their citizenship since 1964, and anybody, with any regard to human rights should be joining us at Embargoed! to ensure that the international isolation of this small but intelligent, talented and friendly community is reversed forthwith. Please join us, wherever you live!

Selen Guneser

Selen Guneser - Secretary

Selen has a number of years experience within the UK political field. She currently works for a political regulator, and has previously worked for the Department of International Development, an international gun control non-governmental organisation and for a local council.

Selen graduated from the University of Reading with a Bachelors degree in Politics and International Relations in 2007 and a Masters degree in International Relations in 2009.

Selen has a strong personal interest in the history of Cyprus, which she has developed further since researching and writing her Masters' thesis on why the 2004 Annan Plan failed. Selen joined the human rights group Embargoed! in September 2010. She was elected as the group's Secretary in July 2011.
