Petition to make Turkish an official EU language - 27 August 2007

A new petition on British Premier Gordon Brown’s 10 Downing Street website is calling on the Prime Minister to push for Turkish to become an official EU language. Launched by Brian Semmens, the petition runs until 15 August 2008 and has already attracted high profile support including the Lord and Lady Maginnis of Drumglass, Baroness Ludford MEP and Sir Michael Graydon.

Petition author Semmens explains the reason behind his lobbying 10 Downing Street: “Given the entry of the Republic of Cyprus into the European Union on the first of May 2004 and that Turkish is an official language of the Republic of Cyprus, it is a manifest injustice that an official language of a member state of the EU has not been adopted as an official language of the EU in line with the adoption of other acceding countries languages”.

The full text of the petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Support the petition to the European Parliament to have Turkish accepted as an official language of the EU following the Republic of Cyprus' entry in to the EU in 2004.

Embargoed! calls on everyone to support this petition, which can be signed by logging on to: Downing Street Petition
