Human rights group slams AKEL over denial of embargoes - 29 April 2006

Below is an Embargoed! statement (both English and Turkish versions provided) concerning the actions of AKEL around a bi-communal event in Brussels on 26 April 2006 and the subsequent withdrawal of half the participating Turkish Cypriot performers.

Human Rights Group Slams AKEL over denial of embargoes

"Embargoed! applauds those Turkish Cypriot artists who refused to participate in the bi-communal cultural event in Brussels on 26 April 2006 - the same day that the human rights demonstration 'Gagged in Brussels/EU keep your promises' took place - and is disappointed by those who chose to remain and perform. While bi-communal events are important for building bridges between the two sides in Cyprus, it is outrageous and unacceptable when a political party seeks to manipulate proceedings and influence public opinion in a false manner. This, sadly, is exactly what AKEL sought to do by issuing unsavoury propaganda designed to demonise the Turkish Cypriot side in front of an EU audience, while its theme of 'One Island: One People, no embargoes', showed AKEL was keen to deflect attention away from the issues the Gagged demonstration was raising. These actions once again show AKEL has no real interest in establishing relations with its neighbours based on respect, honesty and equality.

Every Turkish Cypriot knows about the embargoes. It impacts on every aspect of their lives, curtailing basic freedoms such as direct trade and communication with the rest of the world, and the opportunity to participate in international events. Pretending it doesn't exist is offensive and undermines the delicate trust between the two sides.

We trust that in future, Turkish Cypriots will be wiser to the political games some Greek Cypriot politicians choose to play and not allow themselves to become used in this way. We also hope that Greek Cypriots will face up to what their Administration tries to sweep under the carpet and realise that, although we may all live under the same sky, the actions of the Greek Cypriot Administration denies Turkish Cypriots their fundamental rights. Until this discrimination is eliminated, there can be no true reconciliation in Cyprus."

İnsan Hakları Grubu'ndan ambargoları inkar eden AKEL'e büyük eleştiri

"Ambargolular! 26 Nisan 2006’da Brüksel’de, yani “Susturulanlar Brüksel’de /AB Sözünü Tut” adlı insan hakları gösterisinin yapıldığı gün düzenlenen iki toplumlu kültürel etkinliğe katılmayı reddeden Kıbrıslı Türk sanatçıları alkışlarken, tercihlerini o etkinliğe katılmaktan ve icrayı sanat etmekten yana kullananlar olmasını üzüntüyle karşıladı. Kıbrıs’ta taraflar arasında köprüler kurulması açısından iki toplumlu kültürel etkinlikler önemli olmakla birlikte, siyasi bir partinin kamuoyunu sahtecilikle yönlendirmeyi ve kuruluşların çalışmasını etkilemeye çabalaması utanç verici ve kabul edilemez bir davranıştır. Ne yazık ki AKEL’in AB nezdinde Kıbrıs Türk tarafını tüm kötülüklerin kaynağı gibi gösteren çirkin propagandası bu amaca hizmet etmekteydi ve “Bir Ada: Bir Halk, ambargo yok” adı altında sunduğu etkinlik AKEL’in dikkatleri ‘Susturulanlar’ gösterisinin gündeme getirdiği konulardan uzaklaştırmaya çabaladığını gösteriyordu. Bu olaylar aslında AKEL’in komşularıyla saygı, açıklık ve eşitlik temelinde ilişki kurmaktan yana olmadığın bir kez daha gösterdi.

Her Kıbrıslı Türk ambargoları bilmektedir. Ambargolar onların yaşamının her yüzünü etkilemektedir, dünyanın geri kalan bölümüyle dolaysız ticaret ve iletişim ya da uluslararası etkinliklere katılma fırsatı gibi tem özgürlüklerini sınırlamaktadır. Bunlar yokmuş gibi davranmak saygısızlıktır ve iki taraf arasında var olan zayıf güveni de zedelemektedir.

Gelecekte Kıbrıslı Türklerin, bazı Kıbrıslı Rum siyasetçilerin oynamayı tercih ettikleri siyasi oyunların içyüzünü daha iyi kavrayacağını ve kendilerinin bu şekilde kullanılmasına izin vermeyeceklerine güveniyoruz. Umarız ki Kıbrıslı Rumlar kendi yönetimlerinin halının altına süpürmek istediği gerçekliklerle yüzleşirler ve aynı gökyüzü altında yaşamamıza karşın Kıbrıs Rum Yönetimi’nin Kıbrıslı Türklerin temel haklarını kullanmasına izin vermediğini kavrarlar. Bu ayrımcılık tümüyle sona ermeden, Kıbrıs’ta kelimenin gerçek anlamıyla bir uzlaşma sağlanamaz."
