Imagine if you, your nephew, your daughter, or your grandchild is an outstanding sprinter. Could take on the best in the world. Could set world records, set the world alight. But it’s impossible, held back because of being a Turkish Cypriot.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow this summer and despite athletes from all over the world taking part, once again Turkish Cypriots will be excluded at a major sporting event. It’s simply not fair.
Embargoed!’s Turkish Cypriot Olympic Project (TCOP) highlights non-participation in the Rio Olympics in 2016 but is also targeting the Commonwealth Games for not allowing Turkish Cypriots to participate, even as neutrals.
But we can challenge this, with your help. We have prepared a template, a lobbying letter to ask why Turkish Cypriots cannot take part in Glasgow which you can download from our ‘templates’ here and send to Commonwealth Games’ CEO David Grevemberg, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and various media.
In addition, if you send us a self-addressed stamped envelope to Embargoed! PO Box 100, Surrey SM4 9DH, we will send you free stickers to put on your campaign letters and envelopes to help spread the word.
Embargoed! needs you. Help us prove to the world that Turkish Cypriot athletes deserve the right to take part in international sporting events and help us uncover our own sporting heroes.
