This policy explains which cookies embargoed.org uses, why, and how you can change your choice at any time. In short: analytics cookies are off until you say yes.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. They let the site remember things, for example that you have already answered the cookie banner.
A similar technology, your browser’s “local storage”, can also keep small pieces of information. We treat it in exactly the same way as cookies.
How we use cookies
- Essential cookies are needed for the Site to work and to remember your cookie choice. They do not track you and do not need your consent.
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) help us understand how the Site is used. They are off until you click “Accept analytics” in the cookie banner. If you choose “Essential only”, Google Analytics does not load at all.
- We do not use advertising or social media cookies, and we do not sell any information about your visit.
The cookies we use
| Name | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
emb_consent |
Remembers your answer to the cookie banner (“analytics” or “essential only”), so we don’t ask again on every page. Also kept in your browser’s local storage. | 180 days | Essential |
wordpress_*, wp-settings-* |
Keep committee members and site administrators logged in to the Site’s admin area. Only set if you log in: ordinary visitors never get them. | Session to 14 days; settings 1 year | Essential |
_ga |
Google Analytics: tells visits by different browsers apart, so we can count visitors. Only set if you accept analytics. | 2 years | Analytics |
_ga_F9W941XJ19 |
Google Analytics: keeps track of your current visit (session). Only set if you accept analytics. | 2 years | Analytics |
Some browsers shorten how long cookies are kept. Neither PayPal nor our newsletter service sets cookies on embargoed.org.
Changing your choice
You can change your mind at any time. Click Manage cookie preferences at the bottom of every page (or the button below) to open the cookie banner again.
- If you switch from “Accept analytics” to “Essential only”, we stop Google Analytics and delete its cookies from your browser.
- Your choice is remembered for 180 days, after which we ask again.
Cookies set by other websites
When you join or donate, you go to PayPal’s website, which sets its own cookies under its privacy policy. The same applies to other websites we link to, such as our social media pages.
Controlling cookies in your browser
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings; the Help section of your browser explains how. The Information Commissioner’s Office has more information about cookies. If you block all cookies, the Site will still work, but it will ask for your cookie choice on every visit.
